The game at Charlton Athletic brought about a new formation and a new midfield partnership as the side looked to halt their recent string of defeats, eventually succumbing to a late 1-0 defeat.
With a trip to Coventry on the horizon tomorrow, Connor Dimaio was able to explain the side’s new formation and give his thoughts on the central partnership with Liam O’Neil.
“I think last week against Scunthorpe, we just weren’t disciplined enough,” the midfielder explained. “The manager brought us in for double sessions and that is what the boys needed, just a kick up the butt.
“We deserved it and we practiced this new shape in the double sessions and I think the lads took to it well and I think we have shown we can play that shape. We have passed the ball well today and I think that you can tell that it has really worked in the training ground.
“Charlton are a good team and we said before the game that we would have a good opening ten, 15 minutes where we were solid and then push on a bit and start playing, which you have seen and it opened up for us and I think we controlled the first half.”
With captain Gary Liddle sliding into a three man defence and Jon Nolan dropping to the bench, the Spireites had a new midfield, and Dimaio was able to give his view on what the pair did right, and where they can improve.
“I think that me and Liam O’Neil both did well in there, we were disciplined, we stayed together and kept the ball very well at times.
“Sometimes we needed to press a bit higher and press their midfielders a bit more, instead of letting them just have the ball and pick out passes.”
There were near misses for both Ched Evans and Dan Gardner in the first half and the Republic of Ireland under 21 international told PlayerHD that the side will continue to work hard to turn that bad luck into both goals and points.
“It was just luck on the day, they got the luck and we didn’t and shock, it was Lee Novak who headed it in. That is the way it is going at the moment, but we will go out on Tuesday and change it, we will play like that again and see where we go from there.
“I think we just need a goal and as soon as we get three points we will climb up the league and we will be alright, we have got some great players here.
“We have got to take the positives out of this, there are a lot of positives going into Tuesday and on the back of that performance, I think if we do that again Tuesday we can get a result there.”
